Creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities is a critical role for rehabilitation professionals. To facilitate successful employment outcomes, rehabilitation professional must understand a job seeker’s strengths, interest, and needs as they relate to employment. It is equally important to consider the cultural diversity of the job seeker during this process. This presentation will explore the multicultural competencies needed to support people with disabilities from diverse backgrounds. The presentation will include discussion and information about current demographics of diverse populations, Cultural interaction challenges such as implicit biases and micro-aggressions, and approaches to cultural responsiveness including self-assessment, humility, and the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards. This presentation will help to reflect and improve on culturally relevant competencies for professionals working with multicultural diverse populations.
